Difference between ClusterIP and Internal LoadBalancer in Kubernetes

In the Kubernetes, services are vital components that allow workloads running inside the cluster to communicate with each other and with the outside world. Two common types of service exposure in Kubernetes are ClusterIP and Internal LoadBalancer. Both these service types are used to manage internal traffic within a Kubernetes cluster but operate in different ways. Understanding their distinct functionality, use cases, and technical differences can help Kubernetes administrators make the best choices based on their infrastructure needs.

What is ClusterIP?

ClusterIP is the default service type in Kubernetes. In this example, the service my-clusterip-service exposes port 80 to the internal cluster. The service is mapped to pods labeled app: my-app, and traffic is routed to port 8080 of these pods.

What is an Internal LoadBalancer?

Internal LoadBalancer is a type of Kubernetes service that provisions a cloud provider’s load balancer, but restricts access to internal clients, making it a cluster-only load balancer. Internal LoadBalancers rely on the cloud infrastructure to provide a virtual load balancer that forwards traffic to backend pods, while not exposing the service externally (e.g., to the internet).
Unlike ClusterIP, an Internal LoadBalancer can distribute traffic between nodes across different zones and regions but is still limited to internal traffic within the Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) or private subnet, depending on the cloud provider’s setup.

Key Features of Internal LoadBalancer:
  1. Cloud-Managed Load Balancer: It leverages the underlying cloud provider’s load-balancing capabilities (e.g., Google Cloud’s Internal TCP/UDP Load Balancer, AWS’s Elastic Load Balancer).
  2. Private Networking: Internal LoadBalancers are accessible only from within the same network or VPC. This limits their exposure and maintains private communication.
  3. High Availability: Cloud-managed load balancers typically offer built-in high availability and can distribute traffic between pods across multiple nodes and zones within the cluster.
  4. Regional Traffic Distribution: An Internal LoadBalancer can route traffic to pods across multiple zones within a single region, enhancing service resilience.

In this example, my-internal-lb-service is exposed via an internal cloud-managed load balancer. The annotation ensures that the load balancer is internal (within the VPC), and traffic is routed to backend pods on port 8080.

Technical Comparison Between ClusterIP and Internal LoadBalancer

Now that we have an understanding of both ClusterIP and Internal LoadBalancer, let’s dive deeper into their technical differences:

1. Accessibility:
  • ClusterIP: It is an internal-only service. It can only be accessed by other services and pods inside the Kubernetes cluster. Traffic is restricted to internal communication.
  • Internal LoadBalancer: It also restricts access to internal traffic but operates at the cloud VPC level, meaning traffic can come from any other resources inside the VPC or subnet, not just the Kubernetes cluster.
2. Scope of Use:
  • ClusterIP: Is suitable for intra-cluster communication only. It is designed for cases where services and pods need to communicate with each other inside the cluster but do not need to be exposed externally.
  • Internal LoadBalancer: Is used when you want to expose a service to other services or resources within the same private network or VPC, such as virtual machines or other workloads not necessarily running within Kubernetes. It is useful when multiple applications or services outside the cluster need to access the service.
3. Load Balancing:
  • ClusterIP: There is no external load balancing. Traffic is load-balanced between the backend pods by Kubernetes using kube-proxy (round-robin).
  • Internal LoadBalancer: The traffic is distributed by a cloud-managed load balancer. The load balancer can provide regional load balancing, which is more advanced and can handle traffic spikes more efficiently.
4. Service Discovery:
  • ClusterIP: Services can be accessed by other services inside the cluster via DNS resolution. Kubernetes provides automatic DNS-based service discovery.
  • Internal LoadBalancer: Can be accessed using the internal IP address provided by the cloud provider. It does not rely solely on DNS within the cluster but can be accessed by any resource inside the VPC using the load balancer’s IP.
5. Network Infrastructure:
  • ClusterIP: Is limited to the Kubernetes cluster’s internal networking and does not interact with cloud networking features like VPC or subnets.
  • Internal LoadBalancer: Integrates with the cloud provider’s network infrastructure, typically allowing communication within a VPC or subnet, while also using cloud-specific features like zonal redundancy and traffic distribution.
6. High Availability:
  • ClusterIP: High availability depends on Kubernetes itself and the pods’ scheduling across multiple nodes.
  • Internal LoadBalancer: Leverages the cloud provider’s native load balancing and failover capabilities to provide higher availability across zones or regions.
7. Cloud Provider Dependency:
  • ClusterIP: Does not rely on the underlying cloud infrastructure. It is Kubernetes-native and works independently of the cloud provider.

  • Internal LoadBalancer: Involves additional costs, as it relies on the cloud provider’s load balancing services. The cost can depend on the amount of traffic handled, the number of nodes involved, and the region/zones used.
When to Use ClusterIP vs Internal LoadBalancer
When to Use ClusterIP:
  • When you need internal communication between pods or services inside a Kubernetes cluster and there’s no requirement to expose the service externally.
  • For services that are purely internal, such as microservices communicating with each other, ClusterIP is lightweight and fast.
  • When cost efficiency is a priority, and you want to avoid the additional costs associated with cloud-managed load balancers.
When to Use Internal LoadBalancer:
  • When you want to expose services to other internal resources outside the Kubernetes cluster but within the same private network or VPC.
  • For hybrid environments where some services run inside Kubernetes, and others run in virtual machines or other platforms in the same VPC, an Internal LoadBalancer ensures seamless communication.

When high availability and advanced load balancing features like cross-zone traffic distribution are necessary, Internal LoadBalancer should be preferred as it takes advantage of cloud-native load-balancing capabilities.
